Employment
The D.C. Smith Greenhouse employs student hourlies as greenhouse assistants. During the school year the position requires roughly 10 hours per week, in the summer full or half time positions may be available. Some weekend and holiday work is required. You should be able to lift at least 40 pounds and manage physical work in sometimes hot and/or humid conditions.
Greenhouse staff assist the manager with basic plant care (watering, transplanting, taking cuttings, fertilizer application, pest control – if it’s plant related we probably do it), as well as equipment and facility maintenance (we sweep our own floors, wash lots of windows, fix and maintain equipment, clean up after classes and wash pots).
A background in plant science or gardening is helpful, but not necessary. What is more important is that you be able to work independently and reliably. For more information on applying to work in the CALS Instructional Greenhouse please contact the greenhouse manager.
